Since it was first built in 1928 as a rugby stadium and was completely rebuilt in 1982. Named after JD Ellis; who was the city councilor who approved the use of the for a stadium.

It was also the place where the South African rugby team shocked the world beating New Zealand to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup Trophy. It is, for many, seen as a moment that brought the people of South Africa together after the country was being allowed back into the world sporting stage

The stadium boasts state-of-the art media facilities, exclusive VIP areas, accessibility for disabled fans and team whirlpools.

When not used as a World Cup Stadium it is the home to Orlando Pirates FC
